Intel's 2010 core processors for mobile platform will be given an upgrade in the fourth quarter this year. The Core i5 580M will be the fastest Core i5 for laptops when released. Currently, the Core i5 540M is the fastest in this segment and is clocked at 2.53 GigaHertz (3.06 GHz with turbo boost).

The 580M is based on the 32 nanometer processor technology codenamed Arrandale, while the integrated graphics is 45 nanometer based. The specifications are listed below.

The notebook PC market grew past the 38 million-mark in units in the second quarter of this year. According to DisplaySearch Q3-09 quarterly notebook PC shipment and forecast report, the mini-note PC (netbook) market was particularly strong, growing 40 per cent quarter on quarter.

The strong growth of mini-note PCs drove their share of the portable computer market to 22.2 per cent in Q2 2009. Asus, the pioneer in mini-note PCs, has been steadily losing share because tier-one brands such as Acer, HP, Dell, Lenovo and Toshiba have become increasingly aggressive in this segment.

Mini-note penetration in Latin America and Greater China is higher than notebook PC penetration. The low prices of mini-note PCs make these products more affordable for these emerging markets, and these regions have many first-time PC buyers, who are less likely to require all the bells and whistles available on a larger mainstream notebook PC.

In many regions, telecom providers have been offering subsidised mini-notes for several quarters, which helped propel growth. In Western European countries, a number of telecom firms are subsidising 100 per cent of the price of the mini-note when the customer signs a two-year data plan contract.

In North America, telecom providers are aggressively marketing mini-notes with a two-year data plan contract, while some cable providers are offering heavily discounted mini-notes as an incentive to sign a contract for cable TV, internet and phone service. The incentives have been quite successful in Europe. In North America, these promotions were only test-marketed in Q2 2009, so there is insufficient data to determine if they will achieve the same measure of success.

Mini-notes have been a significant contributor to the growth in the portable PC market as their very attractive price points make owning a secondary computer viable for many consumers.

“Mini-note PC screen sizes have increased steadily, from seven inches to 8.9 inches and then to 10.2 inches. However, the higher prices of these larger netbooks diminish their cost advantage. In addition to many key players, Microsoft is planning to increase the asking price of mini-notes. A significant increase to the asking price of mini-notes may deter consumers who are predominantly using mini-notes as secondary PCs,” said John F Jacobs, Director of Notebook Market Research.

Maingear has just launched what it has claimed is the world's most fastest and powerful laptop for games. Maingear also claims that the eX-L series were the first notebook to ever use Intel mobile quad-core CPUs.

The fastest version of ex-L 18 is powered by Intel Core2Extreme processor X9300 clocked at 2.53 GigaHertz. Two other versions are available and clocked by the slower Core2Duo chip, P8700 at 2.53 GigaHertz and T9600 at 2.8 GigaHertz. It has a memory capacity of upto 8 GigaBytes of type DDR3. Asus has recently showcased its Intel's CULV (Consumer Ultra-Low Voltage) based laptop. The UX30 is a slim notebook with aesthetic design built to last long with a low power consumption.

The UX30 is powered by Intel's ultra-low-voltage penryn based 45 nanometer fabrication technology. The notebook comes with either a Core2Duo or a Core2Solo processor both with a clock frequency of 1.4 GigaHertz. HP has revealed their new netbook series called the HP Mini 5101 which according to them is especially designed for mobile professionals who want a lightweight mini PC.

The HP Mini 5101 features a strong built light weight metal case made of magnesium with aluminium finish. It is powered by Intel's Atom processor with support of upto 2 GigaBytes of memory. Asus has together with Disney Consumer Products launched a new Disney-themed netbook called the Disney Netpal by Asus for kids. Asus states that its new netbook is infused with the Eee PC's trademark ease-of-use and Disney's charm, making it a child's perfect study buddy and play pal.

The Disney Netpal hosts a number of software features designed especially for the kids. It includes 40 robust parental control options, kid-friendly software for music and photos featuring Disney characters and icons in stunning visual environments, reminder-nodes, alarm clock all with in an easy-to-use interface.

Global shipments of netbooks accounted for nearly 20% (One in every five) of all the laptops shipped in the first quarter, according to a market research firm.

Netbooks sold best in Latin America and the Europe, Middle East, and Asia (EMEA) region, which excludes China and Japan, where shipments were the lowest, along with North America, the research firm said. About 45% of all netbooks shipped into EMEA, compared with 26% in North America. European sales were helped by telecom companies, which offered heavily discounted netbooks with the purchase of two-year data plans.

Overall, EMEA accounted for 38% of the total laptop market, while North America was less than 30%. Acer passed Dell for the No. 2 position, capturing 18.8% of the market. Dell fell to No. 3, followed by Toshiba and Lenovo, respectively. With the exception of Acer, the other top five computer makers shipped less than 10% of their volume as netbooks, DisplaySearch said.

"It is clear at the moment that mini-notes play a vital role in the total PC market," DisplaySearch analyst John F. Jacobs said in a statement. Without netbooks, the laptop market would have been down 19% from the first quarter of 2008, instead of only falling 3%.

DisplaySearch isn't alone in finding netbooks driving the PC market in terms of shipments during the economic downturn. Gartner and IDC have drawn similar conclusions. However, the low-cost devices, which typically sell for as little as $300, have significantly lowered the average selling price of products for Acer.

Apple the company which adds an "i" to every product it owns has said that netbooks are junky.

"When I'm looking at what's sold in the netbook market, I see cramped keyboards, junky hardware, very small screens, bad software," said Cook during Apple's financial analyst call. He went on to slam netbooks, saying they were "Not a consumer experience that we would put the Mac brand on", said Apple's COO, Tim Cook.

"As it exists today, we're not interested in it nor would it be something customers would be interested in the long term," added Cook. That is not to say Apple won't make a netbook, but if the firm does decide to make one, expect it to be a lot different from what's currently on the market.

"We are looking at the space," Cupertino's Jobs stand-in admitted, but noted "for those who want a small computer that does browsing [and] email, they might want an Iphone or Ipod Touch".

Unless of course "we find a way to deliver an innovative product that really makes a contribution," said Cook, in which case "we'll do that".

MSI has launched a new series in Wind netbook which consists of three models - U123, U123H and U123T. According to MSI, U123 Series are light and compact which fit into an A4-sized bag but come with a relatively large screen and keyboard. Netbooks may soon become the personal computer of choice for millions of end users, according to Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs' interview at the CTIA Wireless Show in Las Vegas. Jacobs predicted the netbook’s rise could happen “relatively quickly,” although he declined to give a specific timeline.

There’s little doubt that consumers are taking to netbooks in a big way. Some 21 million netbooks will ship this year, nearly double last year’s total, according to Gartner. Even more impressive is that fact that the netbook’s explosive growth comes in a year when overall PC shipments are expected to fall nearly 12 percent from 2008.

Price is certainly driving the netbook’s success. The mini-notebooks, which are fine for Web-surfing, word processing, email, and a few other basic chores, are relatively cheap, and ISPs like AT&T are now offering netbooks with 2-year service plans for as little as $50.
