Intel's Atom processors were released a few months back for mobiles, low-cost ultra-mobile PC notebooks such as the Asus eee pc and other embedded devices. The Atom is the smallest Intel chip made with the world's smallest transistors. There are two types of Atom processor currently available, one codenamed 'Silverthorne' and the other codenamed 'Diamondville'.

Intel recently announced that it is working on new processors based on the Atom architecture. The new Atom's are codenamed 'Lincroft' and are based on 45 nanometre technology.
The new chips are a system-on-chip (SOC) processor with DDR2 and will use HyperThreading technology. Intel has planned to release the new chips somewhere around the second half of next year.
