Intel's Atom processors were released a few months back for mobiles, low-cost ultra-mobile PC notebooks such as the Asus eee pc and other embedded devices. The Atom is the smallest Intel chip made with the world's smallest transistors. There are two types of Atom processor currently available, one codenamed 'Silverthorne' and the other codenamed 'Diamondville'.

Intel recently announced that it is working on new processors based on the Atom architecture. The new Atom's are codenamed 'Lincroft' and are based on 45 nanometre technology.
The new chips are a system-on-chip (SOC) processor with DDR2 and will use HyperThreading technology. Intel has planned to release the new chips somewhere around the second half of next year.

NVidia has cut the price of its new GTX 280 and 260 graphic cards in response to ATI's Radeon R700 series graphic card competitive offerings.

Last week Nvidia cut the prices of GeForce GTX 280, GTX 260 and also 9800 GTX to bring the price close to that of ATI's card - HD4850 and HD4870.
The new prices are as follows:

GTX 280 - $500 (previously $650)
GTX 260 - $300 (previously $400)
9800 GTX - $200 (previously $300)

It is now clear that ATI and Nvidia are in a fierce competition and this is resulting in cheaper graphic cards for the consumers.

Hitachi's new generation 1 TeraByte hard drives

Thursday, July 10, 2008 0 comments

Hitachi was the first one to bring the 1TB hard-disk drive back in January 2007. And now the company is back with not a larger version of the drive but a more efficient model called Deskstar 7K1000.B.

The 7K1000.B is a 3.5-inch, 7,200rpm hard drive with a capacity of 1TB and 32MB buffer. It uses only 3 disks instead of 5 disks being used in the current models drive.

Hitachi says the new 3 disk design improves idle power consumption up to 43 percent, fewer platters should also mean improved reliability, acoustics, and seek times.

As an optional feature to users Hitachi has bundled in Bulk Data Encryption (BDE). BDE provides hardware level encryption using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES).

The Hitachi Deskstar 7K1000.B will sell for $239 when it starts shipping later this month.

AMD's Radeon Forces Nvidia's GTX2xx Price Cuts

Monday, July 7, 2008 0 comments

AMD’s ATI Radeon 4800 GPU has turned out to be a much better chip than initially expected and AMD’s aggressive pricing has put pressure on Nvidia.

With the debut of GeForce GTX 200 series, Nvidia made some adjustments protecting its partners with greater margins, but the ATI Radeon 4800 series is changing that scenario again. AMD has received praise from the press for its ATI Radeon 4800 series, causing Nvidia partners to demand price adjustments.

A quote from a Nvidia spokespeople:

"We’re working with our partners on adjusting the prices for the GTX 280 and 260. The changes are being implemented over the next few days and will take effect sometime next week. Please obtain final retail pricing from the partners, because they set them for their products."

After Nvidia’s adjustment, we should see the prices going down to $359.99 for GTX 260 cards and to $559.99 for GTX 280 cards.

AMD's new Quad-core desktop processor

Thursday, July 3, 2008 0 comments

AMD has announced a new version of its flagship “Black” Phenom X4, as well as two energy-efficient versions of the Phenom X4 chip. The suggested retail price of the new chips are as following:
AMD Phenom X4 9950 Black Edition 2.6-GHz - $235
AMD Phenom X4 9350e 2.0-GHz - $195
AMD Phenom X4 9150e 1.8-GHz - $175

All three chips are manufactured on AMD’s 65-nm process, contain 2 Mbytes of a shard level 3 cache and include 512 Kbytes of level-2 cache per core.

AMD’s new Black processor consumes 140 watts at maximum, an increase over the 9850, which consumes 125 watts. However, the chip also ships with AMD’s OverDrive software with clock multiplier control, allowing users to scale down the performance to save power, or dial it up for more performance. At Computex, Asus released a list of boards that could accept the new 140-watt Black chips.

The energy-efficient Phenom X4s, on the other hand, consume no more than 65 watts in total. All of AMD’s current chips are built with 65-nanometer transistors. Processors with 45-nanometer technology are expected this year. Starting late last year, Intel moved its product line to 45 nanometers, which means more transistors on a chip to deliver better power-to-performance ratios.
